An inspiring, food-filled week on Bornholm Island

By Lucy, founder of Souvenir

Bornholm is a Danish island with a special, creative energy. We spent the first few days in a secluded wooden cabin in a moss-floored pine forest, then we moved to a beach camp tucked between pristine dunes behind one of Denmark's most beautiful beaches - almost empty.

This Trip Kit shares some absolute gems, like a natural wine shop inside a wine lover's front garden shed, the huge dune the kids will love running down, sea buckthorn slushies from a specialist grower, some excellent ice cream shops and a sourdough pizza place worth every minute of the wait.

WHAT THE KIDS WILL LOVE

  • Lots of beach time and sea splashing
  • Camping in the sand and making fairy potions in the mossy forest
  • Picking wild plums, figs, blueberries and apples
  • Yummy sourdough pizza and the traditional fish smokehouses
  • The kids painting shed at artist Oluf Høst's house

WHAT YOU'LL LOVE

  • Waking up to stunning forest views, and reading a book while the kids play in the forest in full view
  • Powdery white sand beaches
  • Discovering makers, artisans and food producers across the island
  • The restaurant at the beach camp, run by a michelin-star restaurant in Copenhagen
  • Feeling inspired in a place that's peaceful, beautiful, un-touristy and with lots of nature

The Essentials

Trip length: Six full days plus a travel day.

Getting there: Fly or drive into Copenhagen, then a 40 minute flight, or drive to Ystad and take the ferry crossing.

Getting around: We rented a car. There is no railway network on the island.

When to go: We went in mid-August and the weather was dry, calm and 20-25C in the daytime.

Tag on: A few days in Copenhagen if you have time.

Best for: kids around 1-12 years.

HOW WE DID IT

Our 3-bed forest cabin (all details in the Trip Kit) was about £320 per night, and the beach camp was about £250 per night (one double and two single beds, with proper mattresses in a huge, well-serviced tent) including breakfast. The itinerary will work from any accommodation in the regions we stayed in.

Our lunches and dinners out were in the region of £30-£40 per person, but you could prep packed lunches for several of the days, and opt for different restaurants.

We hired a car at Copenhagen airport (around £600 for 7 days including insurance) and took the ferry to Bornholm (£20 per person), however you could also take a short flight to Bornholm and hire a car there.
