If you’re looking for the kind of child-friendly rhythm that doesn’t sacrifice grown-up enjoyment, the Danish ‘Riviera’ delivers in spades. Stylish Copenhageners retreat here for weekends and summers drawn by pine forests and quiet white sand beaches. It’s a place where the kids can be free-range, the beaches are beautiful, and locals wander into town in their dressing gowns for coffee after their morning swim in the sea. Denmark makes summer living feel effortless.

The Essentials

The Danish ‘Riviera’ is the coastal region north of Copenhagen.

Trip length: 7 days

Getting there: The nearest airport is Copenhagen and it's around 1.5 hour drive from there.

Getting around: We rented a car at Copenhagen airport, but you could also do a lot of this trip by train if car rental isn't an option.

When to go: We visited in mid-late August. This Trip Kit would work best June-September.

Stay: We stayed in a traditional summerhouse in Tisvilde (details in the Trip Kit), with a garden for the kids to play in, a kitchen you'll actually want to cook in and a balcony for watching the sun set. The Trip Kit will work well from any accommodation along the 'Riviera' region.

Tag on: A few days in Copenhagen if you have time.

HOW WE DID IT

The house was about £280 per night in July/August. Airbnb and Landfolk have lots of choice.

We decided to eat out at lunchtimes and cook dinners at home. Packed lunches would also work well for several of the days.

The majority of this trip is beaches, forests and cafe culture so once you're there you don't need to spend a lot.

We spent about £80 in petrol and the car hire was about £480 with insurance.
