Northern Lights! Huskies! Arctic beaches!

The winter light here is extraordinary. We visited in February when the light took on a jaw-dropping shade of pink as a distant sun peeped above the horizon, illuminating the surrounding ice-covered mountains, then morphed into an ethereal icy blue hue before the sun dropped again. Go for the huskies, reindeers, incredible scenery and northern lights, but don’t miss architectural gems in the city itself such as the Arctic Cathedral. With year-round festivals, the Arctic University of Norway and a thriving food scene, Tromsø is a very cool (pun intended) city.

The Essentials

Trip length: Four full days, plus half a day after you arrive.

Getting there: Fly into Tromsø airport.

Getting around: Tromsø is small and walkable (albeit slowly in the snow) and the pick up point for excursions is in the city centre.

Stay: We stayed in a 2-bed apartment in the centre. Because Tromsø is small, this Trip Kit will work for you wherever you choose to stay.

When to go: November - February for the best chance of seeing the lights.

Best for: Confident walkers or babes-in-sling just because the icy ground makes it tricky for prams (unless you have special kit).

HOW WE DID IT

This was a bucket list trip for us. Eating out is expensive in Tromsø so to keep costs down a little, we ate breakfasts and dinners mostly at our apartment and decided not to stay in an architecturally-designed cabin in the countryside, although that would have been amazing. And we swerved the expensive and touristy ice hotel domes and ice bar.

The 2-bed apartment cost about £350 per night and was basic.

We researched heavily beforehand to tap up the most knowledgable and experienced guides in the area so that every penny was well spent. Group half-day excursions were about £120-£200 per person. The private northern lights tour cost us about £900 total.
