Tai paper fish
Tai paper fish
EDITION 1: TOKYO
Tai (sea bream) comes from the series ‘Kiokugami’ meaning ‘memory paper’ by artist Tetsuya Nagata. He has collected over 2000 old wooden
Kashigata molds, used to make a traditional type of sugar confectionary that you don't see often now. Nagata presses handmade paper into them to achieve the tactile, 3D pattern on the paper, as you can see in some of the images. The faint hue comes from from the sugar components soaked into the molds.
When I last visited Japan I bought a paper postcard by Tetsuya Nagata pressed into the shape of a shrimp. I had intended to gift it but couldn’t part with it. So when I saw these fish I knew I had to bring some to Souvenir.
The fish has a weighted ball inside so that, when you touch the fish, it flaps around like a real fish out of water. It’s weird, but really good, like a lot of things from Japan are.
I’m keeping mine on a bookshelf or in a cosy corner.
