"Dinner at one of Vienna's Heuriger (traditional wine taverns) was so worth the schlep out of town and into the countryside."

Old world charm in Vienna

Austria’s underrated capital is one of those rare cities where you can bribe a child with cake and call it cultural immersion. We loved the high-low approach to eating here: the hotdog stand boasts UNESCO cultural status (and many have good veg/vegan options) while traditional Viennese cafés ooze old-world charm and make you feel like a 1930s flaneur.

We visited in late October: the sun was shining and the weather on the right side of crisp. But every season would give you a good reason to visit, from Christmas markets to riverside living in summer.
