Austria’s underrated capital is one of those rare places where you can bribe a child with cake and call it cultural immersion. Viennese cafe culture has UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status and ooze the kind of old-world charm that makes you feel like a 1930s flaneur. 

This Trip Kit shows you how to get under the skin of Vienna with kids in tow. Vienna is packed with cultural hot spots so we tell you which museums, galleries and palaces to make the time for, which Heuriger (traditional wine tavern) that's worth the trip a little out of town, and how to experience both the modern and old-world sides of the city.

The Essentials

Trip length: 4+ days plus travel days

Getting there: Fly to Vienna airport. The CAT train to the centre is fast and regular.

Getting around: Our family like to explore on foot when we can but Vienna has an efficient and cheap public transport system. The trams are especially good.

Stay: We stayed at an apartment-hotel which rather cleverly features a deli within its grand reception where you can pick up ingredients for a delicious and easy dinner in the apartment’s kitchenette.

Tag on: Vienna is on the very Eastern side of Austria. You could also tag on a couple of days in Bratislava which is only 1.5hrs into neighbouring Slovenia by train or car.

When to go: We visited in late October: the sun was shining and the weather on the right side of crisp. This Trip Kit will work well from February - October.

Best for: 0-12 years old.

HOW WE DID IT

We stayed in a centrally-located apart-hotel with a kitchenette and a deli on the ground floor (details in the Trip Kit). It was about £300 per night.

We had breakfasts at the apartment and prepped snacks for the kids for on-the-go. Meals out were similar to UK/London prices.

Most activities free / low cost except for the zoo at £40 total. Most of our spending budget went on eating out.

We walked most places but the metro costs around £3 per adult and £1.50 for kids over 6.
