Flying long-haul by Molly Goddard-Jeffery
Molly Goddard-Jefferey is the co-founder and creative energy behind pyjama brand Desmond & Dempsey, which she runs with her partner Joel. With roots in Brisbane, Australia she tells us how she navigates long-haul flights with her two young daughters.

SOUVENIR: I think I speak on behalf of most parents when I say how impressive it is that you've not only done long haul to Brisbane several times but also solo.
MOLLY: Hahah! It’s not as hard as you think. Ultimately there is no choice. You have to get through it. I have done it solo twice, with both the girls. My mother in law use to do it with 4 kids! When you’re flying alone, you’re not trying to have an adult conversation or make a joint decision. Your sole attention can be them: your meals are bought to you; there is nowhere to make a mess that needs tidying. You are there purely to entertain or care for them. It makes it almost easier somehow.

SOUVENIR: Which has been the most tricky age so far?
MOLLY: It was definitely easier when our youngest was about three months, because she had no interest in walking. The second time, she was heavier and wanted to move. I think the younger the better, because physically it’s easier. But now, they play together.
SOUVENIR: Did you come armed with toys?
MOLLY: I didn’t have loads of toys either time; just colours, sticky tape, and stickers, (less to carry). I had a few little presents in my bag, like little play dough wrapped up, and when I needed them to get through a security gate or what not, I had something to pull out to calm a tantrum. The first plane was in the day time so we were allowed to watch some TV, but the second was the “sleepy” plane so I just said the TV’s wouldn’t work, and followed the same routine at home (book, bottle etc).
Very inspiring, thank you Molly!
