Vol. 1 - Denmark's Riviera

Anja Sølvhviid's favourite coastal spots around Denmark

Anja Sølvhviid is a brand designer and creative director based in Copenhagen. She has two kids who are 15 and 10. Anja loves exploring Denmark's coastline and hidden gems and tells us about three coastal places she's discovered with her kids.

Thy & Klitmøller

This is a rugged surf spot in north-west Jutland region that's become known in surfing circles as 'Cold Hawaii' due to the size and quality of the waves. It's a tiny fishing port with lots of trading heritage, surrounded by wild dunes and heathland, that's now home to an international surfing community and digital creatives. My kids love the nature here. Locals are passionate about keeping the beaches clean, with organised beach clean ups and a business offering workshops dedicated to transforming beach plastic into useful household items. Lots of creative businesses have moved here in the last few years.

Surf competitions generally take place around the end of September, but Klitmøller tends to be a summer destination and lots of places to eat and shop close for the winter.

We usually rent a cozy summerhouse in Nørre Vorupør, a tiny and idyllic coastal village near Thy where the fishing boats are winched ceremoniously onto the shore each evening.

Helsingør

An hour or so on the train from Copenhagen, or an easy drive, you'll find Helsingør just across the strait from Sweden. There's so much to do here. My kids and I especially love the MS Søfartsmuseet (the maritime museum). It's a beautiful building on the harbour with fascinating stories to tell of the city and it's history as well as Denmark's wider naval and maritime history. The museum is located in an area that my kids love to run around for hours. It also has a great shop!

Dyrehaven

Our family summer trip this year was 'babysitting' a friend's house in the countryside just north of Copenhagen which meant we got to spend some proper time exploring this area. We spent most of our time at Dyrehaven, a sprawling nature park that backs onto the coast. There are countless hiking trails and bike paths weaving through the grassland and forests where you'll spot lots of wild deer. Ermitage Slottet is a grand baroque palace situated in the park that's also worth a visit. But the nature reserve is breathtaking and so peaceful. If you have a spare day on a Copenhagen trip I'd recommend it highly.

For our perfect day in Helsingør, see our Danish Riviera itinerary here.

Thanks Anja!
