The London List

The London List: Burnt, E2

Our London List shares the good 'grown-up' restaurants that welcome young kids. These are our tried-and-tested spots for success: places with people who have gone the extra mile, who have patiently helped us navigate the stressful moments, who genuinely haven't minded a little extra mess and noise, and whose creativity and delicious food put big smiles on all our faces. Today we're talking about Burnt, an airy all-day restaurant inside a railway arch in Bethnal Green.

Burnt is a family-run venture and you can really tell: it's super relaxed, spacious and the short menu offers creative, flavour-packed twists on everyone's favourites.

My friend and I arrived on a Thursday around 11.30am with our two little ones, both under three. The inside tables for four were already booked for lunch, so we took the outside table with bench seats. There was only one baby seat available. Having ordered, we took the kids through to the open kitchen area at the back, where chef-owner Finlay Logan was calmly cooking. While we were showing the kids all the ingredients out on the counter and talking through what might be happening in the kitchen, Finlay spotted us clearly trying to kill time and keep the kids occupied until the food arrived, and very sweetly gave the kids a big strawberry each from the fridge. It was very kind and evidence of someone that has a little one himself and gets it.

We really appreciated the thought that goes into the small things like the server placing the cutlery, water carafe and glasses deliberately far from the kids' reach. One less thing to think about!

Our brunch arrived, stunningly presented with a scattering of herbs and flowers, and it was all delicious and so flavourful. We can't wait to go back.

Between us all we ordered:

1 x Aloo Gobi eggs, fried bread, coriander salsa

1 x Crab, nduja, herb omelette, brown crab aioli

1 x Ricotta, buttermilk pancakes, rhubarb syrup (for the kids to share - they were huge!)

1 x Roast Kent tomato, herbs, capers

2 x Coffees

TOTAL: £56 inc service
