The London List: Kolae, SE1

Our London List shares the good 'grown-up' restaurants that welcome young kids. These are our tried-and-tested spots for success: places with people who have gone the extra mile, who have patiently helped us navigate the stressful moments, who genuinely haven't minded a little extra mess and noise, and whose creativity and delicious food put big smiles on all our faces. Today it's Kolae, a modern and buzzy Thai bar and grill in Borough Market.

I took my daughter, 5, on a lunch date to Kolae. It was risky choice as I figured a lot of the menu would be spicy, but I'd wanted to go there for ages. Before long, my sweet girl was voraciously crunching on deep-fried prawn heads (even the servers were pretty impressed) and stealing pieces of chicken skewer off my plate, so I think I can chalk that up as an unexpected hit.

We were seated downstairs near the open grill. Huge flames would flare up every now and then from the grill which my daughter found quite exciting to see. The server also spent a generous amount of time with us recommending dishes that wouldn't be too fiery.

It's big site and the tables are small but aren't close together. It's also got the perfect volume of background noise and vibey music to mask any tricky moments. The tables on the ground floor near the window have space for a pram by the table but otherwise you'd probably need to fold it. The only downside was that the WCs are way up on the third floor, which might be tricky for potty learners.

Between two of us we shared:

1 x coconut water pickles

1 x crunchy prawn heads

1 x Kolae chicken skewers

1 x green mango salad (spicy)

1 x stonebass red curry

1 x toasted rice ice cream

Table water

TOTAL: Around £60 + service
